Furness Wind Farm
The Baywind Energy Co-operative and Infinergy have submitted a planning application for the proposed Furness Wind Farm to both South Lakeland District Council and Barrow Borough Council.
The development intends to replace the existing Harlock Hill Wind Farm, which has been owned and operated by the community based Baywind Energy Co-operative since 1997. The Harlock Hill Wind Farm has consistently produced clean, renewable energy throughout its operation, however, a combination of technological advances, wind turbine design and the age of the existing turbines has presented a compelling opportunity to re-power the site. In addition, to optimise the available wind resource, the site has been extended to include an area of land adjacent to the existing wind farm, known as Mean Moor.
The proposal consists of replacing the current five 0.5 Megawatt (MW) turbines with five new 2.3MW turbines. Two turbines on the Harlock Hill part of the site will be owned and operated by Baywind, the three turbines on the Mean Moor part of the site will be owned and operated by Infinergy.
The community will be invited to invest in the scheme through the Baywind Energy Co-operative. Investors will receive an annual share of the operating surplus generated by the two proposed Baywind turbines. Baywind aims to maximise the number of local people investing in the Co-operative, by focussing its marketing in the local area, thereby maximising local community benefits. To register an interest in investing in the scheme please contact Baywind at the address below.
An additional benefit to the local community of the proposed Furness Wind Farm will be the provision of a community benefit fund supported by both Baywind and Infinergy. The fund will primarily support energy conservation initiatives and climate change related projects in the local area.
The Furness Wind Farm website continues to be updated with project information. Click here to view a copy of the Environmental Statement prepared to support the planning application. For those without internet access, hard copies of the application have also been supplied to all neighbouring Parish and Town Councils including Lindal and Marton; Ulverston Town Council; Askam and Ireleth; Pennington; Dalton and Newton; and Kirkby Ireleth.
